Why MENTAL PERFORMANCE COACH and not PSYCHOLOGIST

Applied sport psychology involves delivering theory, research and practice to participants of a sport or activity (e.g. athletes, coaches, athletic directors, exercisers, fitness professionals).  The focus for professionals in the field is often to facilitate optimal involvement, performance and enjoyment in the “field of play”.

Applied sport psychology professionals come from a variety of higher education backgrounds, including psychology, sport science (kinesiology) and education.

‘Psychologist’ is a protected term by law and refers to someone who, through extensive training and state licensure, provides mental health counseling or clinical psychology services.  Professionals trained as psychologists should have the competencies to deal with mental health concerns such as anxiety disorders, depression or eating disorders.

Many of the best ‘Sport Psychologists’ around the world are not actually psychologists, nor do they deal with clinical issues.  People such as Julian have a master’s degree specializing in sport and performance psychology, others may have an advanced degree in sport science or education.

Professionals in applied sport psychology often refer to themselves as a ‘Mental Coach’, ‘Mental Conditioning Consultant’, etc.  What’s important is that prospective clients understand the difference between a Clinical Psychologist and a Mental Performance Coach, and choose a consultant that best fits their needs.

The Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) promotes the ethical practice, science and advocacy of the psychology of sport, exercise and health.  AASP is the premier international, multidisciplinary sport and exercise psychology organization that offers certification to qualified professionals who practice sport, exercise, and health psychology.

Julian is a member of AASP with a provisional certification as a Certified Consultant – AASP.
