Mental Performance Model

What does it take to systematically perform your best, find success and happiness?  Industry leaders in sport, business, and education (among others) are continuously working to identify the determining factors (i.e., attitudes, rituals/habits, routines, knowledge, skill, mindset, mental skills) and share them with the world.

My Mental Performance Model comprises the synthesis of theory, research and applied experiences in the fields of sport psychology, education and business as it relates to performance excellence and personal achievement.  It provides performers with a framework of mindset skills and personal attributes needed to gain and sustain high performance; which I equate to seizing the moment, achieving mastery, and providing effective leadership.

First tier of pyramid
Philosophy
Attained through knowledge and wisdom, ethics and reason. Guided by your values in every context of life — your philosophy provides the foundation for being highly motivated, living authentically, finding happiness and fulfillment.

Attitude
Remaining optimistic and industrious. To reach your full potential, you must energetically devote your heart and soul to giving full effort, focusing on the process and improvement, and enjoying the journey while reaching high standards of practice.

Community
We are all part of a larger system that includes teammates, coaches/teachers, family, friends, officials, and others. Success of any measure is built upon effective relationships; the ability to communicate and listen, respect and trust others, share ideas and responsibility.

Vision
A desired future, your overarching intention and purpose. Your vision and philosophy guide the creation of value-driven goals, effective habits, and routines to consistently perform at a high level.

Second tier of pyramid
Commitment
Dedication and an unrelenting persistence to stay the course. Initiative to execute the process, consistently, and grit when the path forward seems too difficult or impossible.

Mindfulness
Focusing your awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting the constant stream of thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations that occur. Awareness — remaining insightful and acquiring new knowledge and understanding from each moment.

Composure
Acceptance of changing conditions, both internal (e.g. pain) and external (e.g. weather). Exhibiting stability and self-control in your responses to strong emotions and thoughts.

Third tier of the pyramid
Confidence
Belief in yourself; conviction that you’ve trained to your potential. Optimal energy levels and the ability to remain poised; the result of mindfully accepting the uncontrollables while simultaneously trusting and committing to the process.

Concentration
Focusing attention clearly and presently on task relevant cues and behaviors. Achieved by remaining mindful, with a clear understanding of what is required to meet the demands of the moment.

Fourth tier (top) of the pyramid
High Performance
Savoring the process, and the toughest of challenges, knowing you’ve put forth your best. Entering flow states, where peak performance seems automatic and effortless. Achieving mastery in your craft, and effective leadership.
